Backyard wrestling:
When I was training in IwW, a bunch of 16-21 year old Backyarders came in, looking to be booked on our shows. I was open minded about it, and said that if they got me a tape, and did some training first, then I'd be more than happy to have a match with them on a small tv taping.
I got the tapes, terrible interviews, terrible wrestling, loads of spots, and laughing commentary from a drunken friend shakily holding the camera.
I got one of the guys in the ring, and I gave him a spot, threw him to the ropes, and he came back, clothslined me and stung me with a high knee in the back. I asked him what happened to the planned spot, and he didn't know what i was talking about! I assumed he was hard of hearing. I asked him how he put together his matches, if they weren't called in the ring.
He prduces an A4 page of scrawled down spots like:
'Suplex into pin, throw into ropes, backdrop, pin, kick out (2), punches, moonsault miss into mule kick'
The guy admitted to getting all the moves off of Smackdown vs Raw, a video game!!!
I told him to just try it my way, because it was obvious he wanted to try to do it. What did he do? He nearly killed me!
That was it for him, and for my belief in backyarding. If your passionate about wrestling, which I was too, as a kid, then just gear up to it. Eat well, get in shape, and develop a character if you want to.
I once dropped a macho man elbow on my brother when I was six off of a window sill, that's about it for my backyarding experience!
